My Internet Curse

I know there are people out there who go online and find exactly what they’re looking for. Lots of times, they find a great deal, too. I know because they tell me or I hear about it from their friends.

Unfortunately, this never, ever happens to me. I work under an Internet curse.

If I am looking for something (oh, say, for example, the bike shoes I want that are nowhere to be found in Austin, yet I have many friends who wear them), I may actually find the item online. I have found my bike shoes. Awesome. But since I am cursed, my size in that color does not exist anywhere in the known universe.

What will happen is as soon as I decide to give up on this color (for example), the shoe will cease to exist for me in any other color, as they will have suddenly gone on clearance in the day that I’ve researched and been snatched up by everyone else at an unbelievable bargain price. I will hear about this from somebody who will send a note, “OMG, I can’t believe I got these shoes for only $50! My friend told me about the deal–she got a pair, too!”

Then, after beating myself up for not acting right away, I run around Austin trying on bike shoes again at every store in town. By the time I (again) find shoes that work–and convince myself that it really is okay to spend an exorbitant amount of money on a pair of leisure-activity shoes (which will also require new pedals and buying new clips)–no one in Austin will either carry those shoes or have them in my size, which means I will go online only to discover that there is some shoe moratorium and no one can sell them to me.

(Actually, it could be that I am in truth Bike Cursed and not Internet Cursed, as absolutely nothing ever goes easy for me when it comes to a bike-related purchase.)

Update from, like, 10 minutes later–THIS IS HILARIOUS! I write this huge amount of bitchy junk about my Internet/Bike Curse, go back online to “get serious” about my bike shoe search and–VOILA–there are the shoes, right color, right size, right price, free shipping.
