Using NaNoWriMo to Publish More

Happy November 1! If you’re reading this, you survived another Halloween. Perhaps you even got your “Rabbit, rabbit” lucky post up on social media. Me? Yes, I survived the insane flood of trick or treaters and costumed parents careening down our street during the neighborhood’s annual Halloween parade. No, being a native Texan and new to this superstition, I failed to think of rabbits at all until midmorning, when I saw many cute bunnies hopping across Twitter posts.

What November 1 has me thinking about is writing. Last year, I tried out National Novel Writing Month for the first time. Since 1999, NaNoWriMo has been helping people finish that book-in-progress by encouraging writing every day. The goal — a complete novel by the end of the month.

Last year, I started a (another) novel. I wrote almost every day in November and posted segments semi-regularly. Want to see the results? Here you go:

So It’s NaNoWriMo…

Shooting Lani and Keeping Up with NaNoWriMo

What I Learned From NaNoWriMo

I worked a bit more on that book but Lani and her shooter are sitting in a folder, languishing. And here we are, another November 1, and NaNoWriMo is staring me in the face, asking with attitude, “Well? Are you playing this month or sitting on the sidelines?”

To be honest, I don’t want to work on that book. My work situation has changed and I don’t have the same available time I did last year. My heart’s just not in it. I’d rather focus on my blog, which doesn’t necessarily preclude working on fiction . . . but I think I’d rather focus on daily writing. Publishing something every day.

I’m toying with the idea of something simple, like writing about one photo. This would be a great way to tackle all the trips I’ve yet to review, the blackout poetry I’ve continued to create but failed to share, and all those book reports waiting in the wings. There are so many things I want to write about. Maybe this is the way to find that time.

So if you see a sudden uptick in published blog pieces, hold on–it’s just for November .  And wish me luck.
