Finding the Right Workout Mix

I finally hit a long ride/long run combo that made me feel tired and glad to rest on Monday:  42 miles on the bike Saturday with a 20 minute run, followed on Sunday with a 3:30 trail run. When I hit the uphills on Ken’s Loop after the 2-hour mark, my quads were feeling it. By the time we got back to Forest Ridge, I was walking most of the uphills.

Also, I totally mismanaged my food. I woke up Sunday not wanting to eat, which for me is very odd. I forced myself to have half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and I stuck the other half in my Camelbak for later. I drank all 70 oz. of my water (with 20 minutes left in the run) and finished with a bite of my sandwich left and all of my Shot Blocks.

No wonder I ran out of gas.

The best part of the run was taking a break and laying down in Bull Creek in the cold water–that was heaven!

One thing I did this week was to keep track of my dog walking. Now, if the dog and I ran, I pulled that out and added it to my run time total. If we walked, it’s in the dog time, which is not included in my workouts. Would you believe I spent 4:55 minutes walking my dog this week?!?

That’s got to count for something.
