Workouts Plus Odds and Ends

Ok:  I’m behind on putting up my workout totals, so I’ll get that out of the way.

August 26–September 1, 2007 workouts

swim        46.36
bike         5:32   (longest bike ride to date, 51.8 miles–wahoo!)
run           2:54.08  (fall-back week, so no really long run)
———————–
total         9:12:44 hours

September 2–8, 2007 workouts

swim       1:15  (new swim group workout)
bike         2:22  (no long bike ride this week-couldn’t work one in around the Labor Day soccer tournament PLUS moved to the next Sunday)
run           7:13  (includes an AWESOME 5-hour greenbelt run-very happy about this workout)
———————-
total         10:50 hours

Today I rested and I sure needed it.

Total non-workout related commentary:  I finished reading Cormac McCarthy’s The Road yesterday.  I can’t remember the last book I read that gave me nightmares…maybe Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot or The Shining ‘way back when I was in high school.

Holy shit–do NOT pick up this book lightly, especially if you are a parent.

Did I like it? No.

Do I think it’s thought-provoking and discussion-worthy? Yes.

Do I think it was all that well written? Not really but you’ve gotta give major points for the idea and his ability to create a horrific, fear-infused mood. I woke up with my heart racing, whimpering, afraid of the dark.

I’d like to re-read it to think about it better but I’m not sure I want to relive the experience. If you thought the movie “Children of Men” was dark, forget about this book.
